This century's major disasters from Hurricane Katrina and the
Fukushima nuclear meltdown to devastating Nepalese earthquakes and
the recent crippling volcanic eruptions and tsunamis in Tonga have
repeatedly taught that government institutions are ill-prepared for
major disaster events, leaving the most vulnerable among us
unprotected. These tragedies represent just the beginning of a new
era of disaster - an era of floods, heatwaves, droughts, and
pandemics fueled by climate change. Laws and government
institutions have struggled to adapt to the scope of the challenge;
old models of risk no longer apply. This Handbook provides timely
guidance, taking stock of the field of disaster law and policy as
it has developed since Hurricane Katrina. Experts from a wide range
of academic and practical backgrounds address the root causes of
disaster vulnerability and offer solutions to build more resilient
communities to ensure that no one is left behind.
Cities are frequently viewed as passive participants to state and
national efforts to solve the toughest urban problems. But the
evidence suggests otherwise. Cities are actively devising
innovative policy solutions and they have the potential to do even
more. In this volume, the authors examine current threats to
communities across the U.S. and the globe. They draw on first-hand
experience with, and accounts of, the crises already precipitated
by climate change, population shifts, and economic inequality. This
volume is distinguished, however, by its central objective of
traveling beyond a description of problems and a discussion of
their serious implications. Each of the thirteen chapters frame
specific recommendations and guidance on the range of core
capacities and interventions that 21st Century cities would be
prudent to consider in mapping their immediate and future responses
to these critical problems. How Cities Will Save the World brings
together authors with frontline experience in the fields of city
redevelopment, urban infrastructure, healthcare, planning,
immigration, historic preservation, and local government
administration. They not only offer their ground level view of
threats caused by climate change, population shifts, and economic
inequality, but they provide solution-driven narratives identifying
promising innovations to help cities tackle this century's greatest
adversities.

Weber) in the small town of Huntington after surviving a bizarre
and near-fatal attack at the hands of her psychotic mother. As well
as making new friends and trying to fit in at her new school, Molly
has to contend with nightmarish hallucinations, nosebleeds and
creepy voices in her head. Has Molly inherited her mother's
insanity, or are there even darker forces at work?
The Roman Empire has been a source of fascination to political
thinkers, the obsession of some of the greatest historians, and has
influenced art down the ages. Now, in a fresh new take on the era,
historian Stuart Laycock sums up the subject in 100 haikus. These
original poems are sometimes witty, sometimes sad, sometimes
playful, sometime serious, but with only a few syllables to play
with they are always concise and to the point. Read them in order
for a sense of the vast sweep of Roman history, or dot around and
find hidden gems. Power, glory, death, slaughter, murder, ambition,
lust, love and triumph. It's all here. Each haiku comes with a
brief historical text to accompany it and an evocative original
Since it was first published more than thirty years ago, hundreds
of thousands of people have used the Wellness Index to assess their

wellness has been thoroughly updated to reflect the latest findings
from John Travis and Regina Ryan.

be connected to the strange mound of earth in the forest behind
their new home?
A group of seven inseparable, rambunctious teenagers, known to
their small hometown as "The Cousin Seven", witness something so
horrifying that they, themselves, cannot even explain. An innocent
summer graduation trip, to a family cabin deep in the hill country
of North East Texas, ends up in the mysterious loss of one of their
friends. Fifteen years later, the remaining group of friends decide
to find answers to their haunting memories. They set out on a
mission, to go back to the cabin that robbed them of their
childhood and has now claimed the lives of two of their lifelong
friend's.

This book is a compilation of my poems from childhood until now.
Sandy Claws is a humorous animal parody of the Christmas stories,
featuring a red lobster, appropriately named "Sandy Claws." His
quirky animal friends share the entire Christmas experience,
culminating in the daring Christmas Eve flight to provide gifts for
those in need. The satirical spoof features the warmth of close
friends, danger, and subtle lifetime lessons. Originally a bedtime
story the author told to his small children some thirty-five years
ago, the narration is being released as a book for his
grandchildren's generation to enjoy.
The Roman military is an iconic, ancient institution; everybody is
familiar with the image of fearsome Roman soldiers marching in
their famous columns. In this book, Roman military experts John and
Hilary Travis turn their attention to the shields used by the
historic Roman stalwarts, drawing on their expertise, their wealth
of illustrated material and the world of re-enactments. In its
study of the panoply of shields used by the Roman army, this book
differs from those preceding in that it has combined the reams of
published information on sculptural imagery and archaeological hard
evidence with an in-depth look at the artefacts themselves, their
component parts and physical manufacture, going further by
reconstructing and subjecting them to regular use in combat
conditions.
